South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Tennessee Volunteers Preview
Tough Schedule Spot: This is an ugly spot for the Gamecocks as the schedule makers did not do them any favors. They just demolished Arkansas on the road and have to go on the college football highway one more time to
play the Volunteers. However they will look right past this game and have an eye on the matchup with the Missouri Tigers who recently upset the Georgia Bulldogs. USC has won three straight against the Vols and will think this will be a cake walk, but they better think again.
Running the rock: Tennessee, which prefers to run the inside zone and spread the field, is one of eight SEC schools averaging greater than 200 yards per game on the ground. Rajion Neal can run the rock. The senior running back has topped the 140-yard mark in three of the team’s six games. All told, he’s racked up 616 yards and seven touchdowns while also making plays in the passing game. South Carolina is giving up over 140 yards per game on the ground and can be beat on the ground.
Vols D: Connor Shaw is having a great season as the Gamecock quarterback, but he will be tested against the Tennessee secondary this week. This season, Tennessee has intercepted a pass on 5.42 percent of defensive plays this season, the best rate in the SEC and eighth-best rate nationally. The Vols will force the first interception this weekend.
Shut down the Clown: The matchup to watch will be South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney vs. Tennessee left tackle Antonio Richardson. Both are NFL talent caliber players and Richardson has what it takes to keep Clowney at bay without double coverage.
Bulletin Board Material: Spurrier gave the Vols something top get fired up about and gave Bucth Jones even more motivation for this matchup.
Spurrier: “Will be the 14th time I’ve coached in Neyland Stadium. … I’ve coached there more than some of their head coaches.”
— Josh Kendall (@JoshatTheState) October 17, 2013
E’nuff Said on that.
Bye Week: The Vols had extra time to prepare for this game. Jones has an 8-1 record as a head coach coming off a bye weeks and he knows how to get his team ready.
South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Tennessee Volunteers Trends
The latest college football trends provide more proof as to why the Gamecocks should be worried about getting upset. The Gamecocks are 2-5 against the spread (ATS) in their last 7 meetings, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a win and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
