BYU vs San Diego State

BYU is usually known for their offense but this year the strength of this team is on defense. BYU boasts the nation’s No. 3 overall defense (266.33 yards per game) and No. 5 scoring defense (14.67 ppg). (via Matt Fortuna)

On offense the Cougars will look to target Cody Hoffman who has 90 catches for 1,134 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season. The Cougars offense has been clicking of late and has posted 40 or more points in the last four games leading up to this bowl game.

The Aztecs boast an impressive resume heading into this game against BYU. San Diego State defeated the Nevada Wolfpack, Boise State Broncos and Air Force Falcons. All three of their losses came against teams who are going to bowl games as well this year, including the Washington Huskies, San Jose State Spartans and Fresno State Bulldogs. They played a difficult schedule and performed very well throughout the season. (via Pigskin report)

On offense for the Aztecs Adam Muema will move the ball on the ground as he leads a Aztec team that ranks 16th in the country in rushing yards per game. Muema has posted 1,355 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground.

BYU also played against a tough schedule and four of the five losses on the season were to teams who are going bowling. In fact the Cougars came very close to upsetting Notre Dame the No. 1 team in the country.

These teams have a long history against one another but BYU has a commanding 27-7-1 lead in the series. The domination also extends to sports betting trends. The Cougars are 10-4 against the spread (ATS) in their last 14 meetings.

The trends don’t stop there. The Aztecs are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 2-10 ATS in their last 12 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game. The Cougars are 8-3 ATS against a team with a winning record and 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games overall.

Defense wins bowl games and in this case, the Cougars have the edge. Don’t let the home field sway you; the Cougars will have plenty of fans cheering them on during the impressive win in the Poinsettia Bowl.
