When scouring the Week 14 NFL schedule for a big game, the Cleveland Browns vs Kansas City Chiefs matchup may not jump off the page, but it will be worth the watch. Both teams will be missing the playoffs this season and this is not an old school rivalry, but several players are talking trash leading up to this big game.
Kansas City Chiefs vs Cleveland Browns Odds: The Browns are currently (-6.5) point favorites as they take to the field against a Chiefs team littered with past Browns personnel.
Returning to Cleveland is quarterback Brady Quinn, running back Peyton Hillis and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Browns coaches are prepared to see some different looks from Daboll’s offense, even if they haven’t been present in 2012. Defensive coordinator Dick Jauron acknowledges that while he’s been preparing the Browns’ defense, it’s almost impossible to account for everything.
“He does a lot of very creative things on offense. We’ll certainly talk about it. You just don’t have time to prepare for every possible gadget play people might run.”
Daboll would love to include Hillis in the mix, especially after the trash talk war between Hillis and Joe Thomas that broke out this week.
Thomas made it very clear that when Hillis left Cleveland, it was for the best. “I think it was better for both sides (he left),” Thomas told The Plain Dealer. “At that point, the situation with him here was toxic, and he didn’t want to be here and players didn’t want him here. It was better for a fresh start at that point.”
Hillis was going through a very public contract dispute and that carried over to the locker room.
“He wasn’t real popular around here the way he went about his business. Not that they didn’t like him as a person, but just the way he hurt the team from not coming to play.”
Let’s just say Hillis was not happy.
“It’s been over a year. Get over it,” Hillis told Kansas City Star reporter Adam Teicher. “I guess when you get paid over 100 million dollars by one team, it’s kind of easy to point the finger at other guys and try to hate on them for trying to get another contract.”
This feud is fun to read about, but is highly overrated. The Chiefs will want to play well against their former team, but the problem is they are not good.
To date, the Chiefs are worst in the NFL with 25 passing scores given away, while averaging 219.9 net passing yards allowed per game. The team has a mere seven interceptions generated so far this year (next to last), with 21 sacks so far (tied for 26th).
Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden is getting better every week and has looked very impressive in his last several starts.
The Browns are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 games after accumulating more than 350 total yards in their previous game, 4-1-1 ATS against a team with a losing record and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in December.
The Chiefs are 1-4 ATS when playing a team with a losing record and 0-4 ATS in the last four games after a win. The Chiefs may keep it close early, but the Browns have more talent and will win big at home.
