Vanderbilt enters this game on a six game winning streak under coach James Franklin. A win in the Music City Bowl would give the Commodores seven wins in a row for the first time in 64 seasons. During that run the Commodores are winning big as they have outscored opponents by an average of 24.0 points per contest. That run is powered by a tough defense. Vandy finished 17th in the country in total defense and 10th in passing defense allowing only 175.9 passing yards per game on a measly 5.6 yards per attempt.
North Carolina State will come into this game with an interim coach. The school poached Dave Doeren from 15th-ranked Northern Illinois hours after he won his second straight MAC title and an Orange Bowl berth after dismissing Tom O’Brien. Dana Bible, the Wolfpack’s offensive coordinator, will be at the helm for this bowl game.
Bible will have his hands full against Vanderbilt and if this game and the Wolf pack will go for it on fourth down often due to a horrible special teams unit. Ranking at an awful 112th in the country NC State kicker Niklas Sade is 12-of-21 on the season for just a 57% conversion rate. Anything beyond 30 yards is an adventure for Sade who is 8-of-17 as the distance increases.
This puts the pressure on senior Mike Glennon who will throw early and often. His NFL stock is rising rapidly, but he will have to beat a very tough secondary in this game.
College Football Bowl Trends of the Game
Home bowl teams are 15-6 against the spread off back-to-back wins.
Franklin was passed over by North Carolina State and although he would have stayed at Vanderbilt, that gives the coach motivation to show up the school. This game will be close early but Vanderbilt will take over late and cover this number.
NC St vs Vanderbilt Predictions: Vanderbilt -7
