The Utah State Aggies are having one of their best college football seasons ever.

The Aggies have won 10 games on the season (a new team record) and they are currently ranked No. 18 in the college football rankings. They won the Western Athletic Conference title outright and went undefeated in conference play for the first time. The last goal to cap off the season in perfect fashion would be a bowl victory.

The Aggies will look for that victory when they go up against the Toledo Rockets in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Utah State, representing the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and the University of Toledo, representing the Mid-American Conference (MAC), will face-off in the 15th annual Famous Idaho Potato Bowl held at Bronco Stadium on Saturday Dec. 15 at 2:30 p.m.

Toledo vs Utah State Odds: The Aggies are (-10) point favorites in this game over the Rockets with the total set at 57.

The Aggies have a shot at redemption in this game after the dropped last year’s game in a thriller 24-23 against Ohio. It won’t be easy against a Toledo team that fields an impressive resume on the season as well.

Toledo vs Utah State: Picks and Predictions

They won eight straight games at one point, including an upset of then-No. 18 Cincinnati. They were ranked as high as No. 23 in the Top 25 and last month broke into the BCS standings for the first time in school history. All three of the Rockets’ losses came to teams also playing in the postseason.

Toledo, which is making its 13th bowl appearance, to include three straight, won the 2011 Military Bowl beating Air Force 42-41

The bowl game has a reputation for offensive fireworks — and this matchup has the potential for points. Utah State is No. 26 in the county in total offense, averaging 459.7 yards per game. Toledo ranks 28th in the nation in total offense, averaging 456.1 yards per game.

The edge may be on defense as Utah State can play much better defense than Toledo, ranking eighth in the nation in points allowed

It also has a reputation for being a very close game. History shows that the Idaho Potato Bowl has been a very competitive and balanced bowl; six of the last games played have been won on the last drive of the game.

The Aggies have plenty of injuries heading into this game. One key Aggie — senior safety McKade Brady — is still questionable for next week while he nurses a broken jaw.

The Aggies are just anxious to play the game. “Guys have some anxiety because we’re waiting for the game to get here,” senior cornerback Will Davis said. “We’ve been off for a few weeks; we know who we’re playing. So we just really want to get out there and play.”

They will have to get over that anxiety quick against a talented Rockets team.

Toledo’s explosive offense is led by wide receiver Bernard Reedy, who had over 1,000 receiving yards in 2012. Reedy will demand double coverage all night long or he will exploit this Aggies defense.  Junior quarterback Terrance Owens will look for his favorite target early in this bowl game.

On the season, Owens teamed up with Alonzo Russell and Reedy for nearly 2,000 of his 2,677 yards passing. Junior running back David Fluellen rushed for 1,460 yards for a balanced offense that ranks in the top 50 in the country in both passing and rushing.

The Rockets have a very experienced team coming into this bowl game and they want a victory for their first year coach, Matt Campbell.

The Rockets have more impressive wins against bowl eligible teams and this line is inflated due to the Aggies ranking in the AP Poll.

The Rockets are 20-8 against the spread (ATS) in their last 28 games following loss against the spread and the Aggies are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in December. The Aggies will fade again as the Rockets have a chance of pulling off the major upset.
