The winner of this game could very well end up in the ACC championship game. Miami, Virginia Tech and Duke each have two losses at the top of the division standings. But the Hurricanes and Hokies are the only teams in the Coastal that can claim a berth in Charlotte by winning their remaining ACC games. That basically makes this a must-win for these teams heading into this game.
The Hokies have owned this series of late. Virginia Tech has won three straight in the series and has won six of eight since both schools joined the ACC in 2004.
The Hokies beat the Hurricanes 35-31 a year ago in exciting fashion and perhaps the most spectacular quarterback performance a Hokie quarterback will ever put together. Logan Thomas was 23-of-25 for 310 yards, 3 passing touchdowns and 11 carries for 38 yards and 2 touchdowns, including the game-winning 19-yard run on 4th-and-1 with 56 seconds left, and the Hokies should take advantage of that awful defense once again.
The Canes are in rebuilding mode and while the future is bright, right now they are having trouble stopping anyone on defense. The defense is so bad the offense barely gets any time on the field and a big reason why the Canes are a disturbing 119th in the country in time of possession.
The Hurricanes rank No. 114 nationally in total defense, giving up over 499 yards per game. They are also tied with Kentucky for No. 93 in the nation in scoring defense, giving up 32.4 points per game. Both of those rankings are the lowest for a team the Hokies will have faced as of the game.
The Hokies are 18-7 against the spread (ATS) in their last 25 Thursday games, 24-8-1 ATS in their last 33 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game, and 22-6 ATS in their last 28 games in November.
The Hurricanes are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home and they will lose again to the Hokies in this Thursday night game.
