The NBA is very happy to have the New York Knicks back in the playoffs. However, the Knicks fell short at the buzzer in the opening game against the Atlanta Hawks. Bill Huber of SI.com is reporting multiple sportsbooks believe Aaron Rodgers will announce his retirement before Wednesday’s first practice of training camp. Here’s more detail.

From the article by Huber: “Las Vegas sportsbooks are preparing for Aaron Rodgers to retire and not return to the Green Bay Packers.

“Because of the importance of the reigning NFL MVP, Westgate SuperBook recently closed all its NFC North markets, including projected wins, playoff odds, divisional odds and weekly lines for the four division teams, one oddsmaker at the sportsbook said via a Twitter direct message.

“Two other sportsbooks contacted after that initial message said the expectation is Rodgers is going to announce his retirement sometime before the first practice on Wednesday. In response, one of those sportsbooks pushed out its prices on the Packers to win the NFC North and shortened the odds for the other teams. It also shortened the odds of Patrick Mahomes winning NFL MVP.

This is a potential move for Rodgers, who could sit out a year, unretire, and then come back as a free agent. This will allow him to potentially pick where he will go and he may bring others with him, like Davonte Adams.

For the last few weeks all of the NFL attention has been on Julio Jones, but that changed yesterday. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers appeared on SportsCenter to have one last conversation with Kenny Mayne, who is leaving ESPN. Of course, Mayne questioned Rodgers on his current situation in Green Bay and Rodgers did not disappoint. Rodgers kept it cordial, but it allows for some interpretation. The Aaron Rodgers interview is all anyone is talking about and for good reason. The odds say Rodgers will be traded and the rumors are flying. We decided to decipher the conversation and read between the lines.

Aaron Rodgers Interview: Breaking it Down

It’s not about Jordan

Rodgers attempted to clear things up about the infamous draft pick of quarterback Jordan Love.

“With my situation, look it’s never been about the draft pick, picking Jordan,” Rodgers told Mayne. “I love Jordan; he’s a great kid. [We’ve had] a lot of fun to work together. Love the coaching staff, love my teammates, love the fan base in Green Bay.

Read between the lines

Rodgers basically spewed nothing but positiveness and love for everyone in the organization. But its the omission that stood out. That one person is general manager Brian Gutekunst. It is rumored that Rodgers wants Gutekunst fired if he is going to stay in Green Bay. This rift is very public and Rodgers has shared his opinion with teammates.

Plans Ruined

Rodgers reflects on last season and how he performed. Insinuating what it means for his future.

“A lot of this was put in motion last year, and the wrench was just kind of thrown into it when I won MVP and played the way I played last year,” Rodgers said.

Read between the lines

It is clear that Rodgers believes the Packers were giving him one more season before parting ways. He was obviously driven to play well and by winning the MVP he sent a clear message to the Packers that he is not done and they have made a huge mistake.

Covering his Tracks

Rodgers, in a roundabout way addressed the fans and it made it clear that the people are the most important thing.

“But it is about the people, and that’s the most important thing. Green Bay has always been about the people.”

Read Between the Lines

Rodgers is making a PR move. It is clear he wants out of Green Bay and he is not letting up on the front office. By saying this he wants the fans to know that they are important. This is attempt to let the fans know that he did not cause this rift and he cares about them. But let’s face it, that’s not the case.

Leaving a Legacy

Rodgers mentioned many faces names in Green Bay history in his interview.

Curly Lambeau being owner and founder to the ’60s with [Vince] Lombardi and Bart Starr and all those incredible names to the ’90s teams with coach [Mike] Holmgren and Favrey [Brett Favre] and the Minister of Defense [Reggie White] to the run that we’ve been on. It’s about the people.”

Rodgers is really concerned with his legacy. He considers himself as the face of the franchise.He wants to be on the Mount Rushmore of the Packers history books. This is a deserving moniker, but he ended it with once again referencing “the people” making sure although he wants to be remembered as one of the best, the fans are the most important.

Saying Goodbye

Rodgers reflects numerous times in the interview on his time in Green Bay.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to play with a number of amazing, amazing people and got to work for some amazing people as well. It’s those people that build the foundation of those entities. I think sometimes we forget that.”

This is a clear farewell and he is thanking the many great people that he played with. He mentions the people he played with (players) and played for (front office) but ends it with the statement that somewhere along the way, the front office forgot what was important to Rodgers.

Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, but he is also stubborn. He is driven by disdain more than anything and has used this to motivate his career, every step of the way. Now he is using that energy to force Green Bay to trade him and that is exactly what he will get.

Two Big Questions

Before placing a bet on this game there are two questions that must be addressed.

Is Chris Paul ok?

Suns superstar Chris Paul suffered a shoulder contusion in game one, but he played through the pain. Paul is the leader on the floor and he set the tone in game one with his physical play and his attack on both ends of the court.

Paul is still sore, but he will be on the court for game two. It is still uncertain how effective he will be with his ailment.

Will Anthony Davis show up?

There is every reason to believe that Anthony Davis will have a much better game this time out. If Davis just had a bad game it would be one thing, but it is uncertain if he is at 100 percent as he recovers from an injury. AD needs to have a big game for the Lakers to succeed. He shot 5 of 16 from the floor, but the major concern is a lackluster play on defense.

The Lakers have more issues than AD. The entire team shot way too many threes and seemed to play at the Suns pace, which is not where they excel. The Lakers had no answer for Devin Booker who dominated on offense. Booker split all the doubles, finding the open teammate for points and the Lakers defense were late on rotations. Let’s make it clear; the Lakers do not have a guard that can handle Booker.

The Lakers got the benefit of the calls as they were awarded more free throws than the Suns by a wide margin. The Sun’s crowd made a true difference in the game and the Lakers are just 2-6-1 ATS in the last nine road games.

Finally, the Suns have a 32-22-1 record against the number this year when they play as at least a 2-point underdog. Phoenix has covered 11 of 15 ATS as an underdog and they get another win to take a 2-0 lead and send Lakers Nation into panic mode.

Western Conference NBA playoff predictions

Last year we correctly predicted that the LA Lakers would win the west and they are once again favorites to advance to the NBA Finals.

First Round

It’s clear that the Lakers will have their hands full with the Phoenix Suns and that was very clear in game one. But don’t fret, the Lakers are a bigger team will play physical. This will wear down the Suns and they will advance.

The Blazers will let the Nuggets make this a series too, but Portland moves on. Even though both the Clippers and Jazz have issues that will rear their ugly head in the opening round, both teams will advance.

Second Round

The Blazers will need to play defense if they have any hopes of beating LeBron James and the Lakers. Unfortunately for Portland fans, they don’t play any defense. The Lakers may lose one game in Portland, but they are going to advance.

The Utah Jazz are very disciplined and they are very deserving of the No. 1 seed, but the Clippers are going to advance in this series. Paul George and the Clippers have some issues with consistency, but the NBA wants LA vs LA in the Finals and that is exactly what they will get.

Western Conference Finals

LeBron vs Kawhi will be the story to watch in the Finals. The difference is that the Clippers are healthy. The Lakers will come in battered and bruised. The Clippers will get revenge,  George will finally get his playoff redemption and the Clippers will advance in 6 games to the NBA Finals. Clippers win the western conference.

Eastern Conference NBA playoff predictions

Finally for the first time decades, the East is better than the West. However, this can make it difficult to pick winners with so many tightly contested match ups.

First Round

The Brooklyn Nets will be the team to watch for good reason. They are focused and it will show in the first round as they sweep the short-handed Boston Celtics out of the first round.

The 76ers will be equally impressive in the first round of the playoffs as they only lose one game as they usher Russell Westbrook and the Washington Wizards out of the playoffs.

Down to the Wire

The other two series will be very close. The Knicks will need all seven games if they want to take down the pesky Hawks. These teams are very similar and with two very god coaches, this will be a chess match that will go down to the wire. Knicks advance because the NBA needs them too.

The first game between Milwaukee and Miami went to overtime and this is what this series is going to be all about. However, this is a different Bucks team and they will win and advance.

Second Round

This second round will be fun to watch. Four really good teams will face off. The Sixers will drop a game in MSG, but they will advance and await the winner of the Nets vs Bucks, which will be the best series of the playoffs. The Bucks are no pushover and this team will not be intimidated to do battle with Kevin Durant and the rest of the Nets.

This will go deep and a seven game series will not be surprising. However, when the dust has settled, the Nets will advance to the conference finals.

Eastern Conference Finals

The Sixers and the Nets will be a match-up to watch. Ben Simmons is an elite defender that will be able to guard Kyrie Irving on the perimeter. Joel Embiid provides the size down low that the Nets do not have. This will allow the Sixers to make this a series. Trust the process, the Sixers beat the Nets and advance to the NBA Finals. 

NBA Finals

The Sixers vs Clippers is not Lakers vs Nets, but it will still be an incredible match up with plenty of big names. The major difference in this series will be Kawhi Leonard. He has been on this stage multiple times and always delivers. He will do it once again as he snags the MVP and the championship.

Lakers vs Suns

LeBron James is always must-see basketball and that is the case in this opening series. The Lakers vs Suns series has the potential to be a seven-game series. The first thing that stands out about this match-up is the point spread. According to the sportsbooks, the Lakers are the favorite to win the championship. The Julio Jones rumors are swirling for sure. The Chargers and the Patriots are making some noise as teams that are high on Jones. Especially the Patriots as reports are surfacing that they are considering making a move for the veteran.

The 49ers already dumped draft picks in this year’s draft so it’s unlikely they do it for an older wideout. The Patriots, Chargers, and the Titans are also teams that will be in the mix. Belichick won’t dump major draft capital and the Titans will likely pass. That leaves two teams that will vie for Julio’s services, the Raiders, and the Colts. The Raiders are always looking for a big name to bring to Las Vegas and they have been linked to Jones before.

Gruden loves veteran wide receivers and a proven pass catcher would be an asset to the team. He will also help in the growth and development of young players like Henry Ruggs.  It won’t be easy but the one team that will trade for Julio Jones is the Las Vegas Raiders.
