Atlanta Hawks vs. Phoenix Suns

2021 Atlanta Hawks vs. Phoenix Suns Matchup Preview

By Max Heering

The 4-5 Atlanta Hawks will have a tough matchup on the road tonight against the Phoenix Suns. The Hawks are coming off a 116-98 loss against the Utah Jazz that saw their record drop below .500. Point guard Trae Young was impressive in the loss with 21 points and seven assists. On the other side, the 4-3 Phoenix Suns are gaining some momentum and have won three games in a row. They are coming off a 123-111 win against the rebuilding Houston Rockets.  Guard Devin Booker led the Suns in scoring with 27 points and also had nine rebounds. It is worth noting that guard Landry Shamet had a productive game off the bench too. He scored 19 points in 19 minutes.

Hawks vs. Suns Predictions

The Atlanta Hawks still have a talented team, but they have struggled to string some wins together this season against some of the NBA’s best. Even though they have been losing, they have maintained almost all of their roster from last year and should not be concerned about their skill level. The Phoenix Suns, on the other hand, are feeling pretty good. They have momentum from winning three games in a row and will be playing at home tonight. Those last three wins have not been against great teams, but it still feels nice to pull out a few wins in a row.

I believe the Hawks are a better team, but they will be outplayed tonight by the surging Suns. Devin Booker has continued his scoring dominance into this season, averaging 22.6 points per game, and point guard Chris Paul has been passing the ball as effectively as ever. He is averaging 12 assists a game and just passed Steve Nash for the third-most assists ever. This will be a close game, but the Suns will pull it out and push their winning streak to four.

My Prediction: Suns 110, Hawks 102 [BET ON THE GAME HERE]

Avoid The Upset

The first step of surviving is avoiding the upset. Last week hundreds of entries went down when the New York Jets pulled off the upset against the Cincinnati Bengals. This is the second time this year that the Jets pulled off a big-time upset. The Jets will have the chance to do it again this week on Thursday when they play against the Indianapolis Colts.Although the Jets have proved to be a pesky underdog, the Colts will undoubtedly be a popular pick. There are several teams that will be a popular pick this week.

Popular Picks

Dallas Cowboys to beat the Denver Broncos

Buffalo Bills to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars

LA Rams to Beat the Tennessee Titans

Although Dak Prescott’s status is unclear, the Dallas Cowboys will be a popular survivor pick at home against the Denver Broncos. The Buffalo Bills will most certainly be a popular pick on the road against the hapless Jacksonville Jaguars. Finally, the Rams will be a popular pick against the Titans without Derrick Henry. It is okay to follow along the popular picks, but if you have used the teams already, you may have to get creative with your survivor selections.

Other Picks To Consider

Pittsburgh Steelers to beat the Chicago Bears

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been inconsistent this season, but in a win against the Browns, the Steelers look like they are back on course. The offensive line was incredible against the Browns, carving big paths for Najee Harris who piled up 91 yards and one score. If you can wait till Monday Night, the Steelers are a pick to consider.

Beware of these Teams

Beware of several teams who may be in a tough spot this week. The Patriots are off a big win and although they are playing the Panthers, it will be the second road game in a row. The New Orleans Saints are at home against the Falcons, but beware! The Saints have uncertainty at quarterback and they are off a huge win against the Buccaneers. If you are feeling brave at this point in your survivor contest, there is an upset pick to consider.

Upset Special

The Browns are an interesting upset pick this week. In the loss against the Jets, the Bengals allowed over 400 yards in the air. Baker Mayfield will take advantage of this weakness and the Browns are in must-win mode if they want to stay alive in the very difficult AFC North. If you want to stay away from the popular picks and you are brave enough to back a dog, the Browns are your pick this week.

NFL Week 6 2021 Predictions

NFL Week 6 2021 Predictions and the 5 Teams To Bet On This Week

This NFL season is wacky. Teams that were expected to succeed like the Chiefs are struggling. Young quarterbacks like Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts are killing it in fantasy football and if you bet on the NFL realize one thing. The underdogs are off to a hot start. Betting on the NFL is not easy, but our NFL Week 6 2021 Predictions reveal the five teams to bet on.

Bet on the Jacksonville Jaguars +3.5

The early game in London is a treat with the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars giving us some early football. Tua Tagovailoa is back for the Dolphins and that is drawing some attention as over 60 percent of the action is on the Dolphins.

However, the Fins will be without Xavien Howard and DeVante Parker for this game. Jags RB James Robinson is running the ball well and has 75 yards or more per game. The past three teams with 0-5 records to be underdogs of four points or fewer all won on the field without the spread. The Jags are used to coming to London and will have all of the logistics figured out. The Dolphins are 2-5 ATS overall and the Jags are the best bet to make.

Match your bet with a big bonus of $1000!

Bet on the Baltimore Ravens -2.5

The LA Chargers are the flavor of the week and everyone is buying in on the Bolts. In fact, Over 80 percent of the bets are backing LA. The Chargers are a very good team, but now they travel across the country to do battle with the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are viewed by many as a “lucky” team based on how they get victories, but that is not the case. The birds are well-coached and Lamar Jackson is playing the best football of his career. Jackson posted an incredible 86 percent completion rate and it is obvious that he is becoming one of the best at his position. Jackson is 24-16-2 ATS and the Ravens will beat the Bolts in Week 6.

Bet on this game here and double your deposit!

Bet on the Patriots +3.5

The Patriots are battling the Dallas Cowboys this week and its easy to see the Patriots are not the same without Tom Brady. However, the Patriots can still plan well and the coaching edge in this game belongs to Bill Belichick. The public loves to bet on Dallas and the Cowboys are the only undefeated team against the spread this season.

Belichick thrives in the underdog role with a 15-4 ATS record as a home dog. But that ATS trend is not because of Brady, because Belichick is 16-11 ATS without Brady as a dog. This is the exact scenario we saw against the Buccaneers early this year. The Patriots will put the offense in a good spot by controlling the clock and on defense, they will take away the strength of Dallas.

Bet on the Chicago Bears +5.5

The Justin Field era is here. This is the type of game that will win over the fan base and maybe even save coaching jobs. Fields and the Bears host Aaron Rodgers and the Packers in perhaps the biggest game of the season for the Bears. Green Bay has covered the past four meetings, and Chicago wants to change that narrative. They do that by slowing down the game and controlling the tempo. The Bears are starting to win and although it is ugly, all that matters is winning. The Bears are 14-6-1 ATS as a home underdog and they are the team to bet.

Bet on this game here and get an extra point added to the spread of your favorite team!

Bet on the Raiders +3.5

The Jon Gruden scandal is ugly and it hurt this team. This is why the Raiders struggled so much a week ago. But Gruden is gone and the Raiders have a new head coach in Rich Bisaccia that they want to win for. Everyone is backing a Broncos team that is on a two-game losing streak because of the scandal. That’s a mistake. The Broncos are 7-15 ATS against the division and 3-9-1 ATS as a home favorite. The Raiders offense lights up behind Derrick Carr and the underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings in this series. The Raiders will win this game.

Stanford vs Arizona State Football Prediction

Stanford vs Arizona State Football Prediction and Pick

Friday night football features a fantastic match-up between two Pac 12 foes. The Arizona State Sun Devils enter this game ranked 22nd in the country. They will host a Stanford Cardinal team that is off a big upset win and looking to knock off another big-name football program. Last week there were plenty of upsets in college football, will another one happen on Friday night?

Odds and Trends

Stanford may have upset Oregon a week ago, but the oddsmakers are not giving the Cardinal respect in this road game. Stanford is a double-digit underdog in Tempe and the betting action is clearly on the home team, causing the spread to rise a few points since the opening. This is normal as the public loves to bet favorites and Arizona State is statistically the better team.

Can’t Slow Down the Sun Devils

Arizona State is an offensive juggernaut. QB Jayden Daniels has led Arizona State to an undefeated Pac-12 record to this point. Now Daniels will go up against a Stanford defense that allowed over 440 yards against Oregon. Daniels will look to exploit a hobbling secondary and connect with his favorite target, Ricky Pearsall. This offense is not all about the pass, however, since they average 5.5 yards per carry. Stanford will have to keep up on offense if they have hope of winning this game or covering the spread.

Stanford vs Arizona State Football Prediction and Pick

The well-coached Cardinal team is tough to beat. They are 5-1-1 ATS in the last seven games on the road and the last seven games in the conference. Since the Sun Devils are just 2-14 ATS in the last 16 games as a favorite, the Cardinal may be a tempting underdog to take. However, they have penalty problems and there is going to be some letdown after the big win against Oregon. Arizona State is the much better team, but the side is not the best bet in this game. The over is 25-8-1 in Cardinal last 34 games as a road underdog and this will be a high-scoring affair.

Panthers vs Texans Pick

How to Bet on Panthers vs Texans

When the NFL week 3 odds are posted, the Thursday night game is always a very popular game. It is a stand-alone game and a chance for people who bet on football to get a victory leading into a busy week of football. Although a matchup featuring the Carolina Panthers and the Houston Texans may not attract a lot of attention, that all changes if it is a primetime game.

Limping Texans

The Texans are not a very good football team, but they are still putting up a good fight. The Texans will hit the field tonight without Tyrod Taylor. The often-injured quarterback is injured again and the Texans will not go to DeShaun Watson. Instead, Davis Mills will get the start and that is adding an unknown to this game.

Keep Pounding Panthers

The Panthers are so far the surprise team of the season. They are 2-0 on the season and they have an offense that is clicking to go with a stifling defense. The Panthers are 7-0 against the spread in the last seven road games, but this one is different.  Thursday night games rarely favor the road team. With a short week and travel, the road team is at a disadvantage. Add in that the Saints are off an impressive win against a divisional rival and that makes this a letdown game.

Panthers vs Texans Pick

This is a game that you do not want to pass on. The Panthers are the better team but in a tough spot. Houston is in a good spot, but starting an unpredictable quarterback. But I know why you are here; you are here for the picks. The Panthers are 4-12-1 ATS as a road favorite and 0-6 ATS in the last 6 Thursday games. Hold your nose and trust the system.

Saturday, August 21

Buffalo Bills at Chicago Bears

[BET on This Game Here]

The big news in this game is that Mitch Trubisky is going to get some playing time against the Bears. The Bills will go out of their way to make sure he has a decent outing. And the fans will look forward to it.

However, the Bears are deeper especially at QB since Andy Dalton has something to prove after the comments that he made earlier this week.

Bet on the Bears -5

New York Jets at Green Bay Packers

[BET on This Game Here]

The Jets seem serious about winning in the preseason. The Packers? Not so much. Jordan Love is unlikely to play and you know Green Bay wants to keep Aaron Rodgers healthy. Zach Wilson will add to his impressive debut with another quality outing and that makes the Jets, the best bet in this game.

Bet on the Jets -2.5

Baltimore Ravens at Carolina Panthers

[BET on This Game Here]

As I said in week one, don’t bet against Jim Harbaugh and the Ravens in the preseason. All they do is win and they are going to break a record for consecutive victories if they win this game against the Panthers. Let’s not make it hard.

Bet on the Ravens -3.5

Tennessee Titans at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

[BET on This Game Here]

The joint practices have been fun to watch as these two teams are getting feisty. Bucs WR Antonio Brown was thrown out of practice and they had four brawls during the joint practices. That is the mentality of the Titans who play hard every time out. This includes the preseason.

Bet on the Titans PK

Detroit Lions at Pittsburgh Steelers

[BET on This Game Here]

The Ravens get credit for a successful preseason, but what about the Steelers? Mike Tomlin is 11-3 in his last 14 games. But, the Lions need a successful outing in this contest. The Steelers have had a good preseason and will be looking past this game as they focus on the start of the season. The Steelers still win, but it’s close.

Bet on the Lions +6.5

Indianapolis Colts at Minnesota Vikings

[BET on This Game Here]

Don’t let last week influence how you bet this week. The Vikings rested everyone and got crushed, so it’s easy to fade them this week against the Colts. But it also can be a sign of how Mike Zimmer is treating the new preseason schedule. The Colts have announced that they will play most of their starters in this game. The Colts are more interested in this game and therefore the bet to make.

Bet on the Colts +2.5

Atlanta Falcons at Miami Dolphins

[BET on This Game Here]

Not many people may have noticed it, but the Dolphins are in trouble. The offensive line is not getting the job done and the rushing game is struggling to find a lead back. The Falcons may not have had a good offensive outing, but Calvin Ridley is looking sharp in practice. In fact, the Falcons looked like the much better team in joint practices and that will show in this game.

Bet on the Falcons +5

Houston Texans at Dallas Cowboys

[BET on This Game Here]

Bad teams play well in the preseason. We mentioned that a week ago when the Texans were small dogs against the Packers. They are just over an FG underdog against the Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy does not care about winning. He is 2-4 in the last 6 preseason games and the Cowboys treat this as a walkthrough and the Texans treat this as the Super Bowl.

Bet on the Texans +3.5

Las Vegas Raiders at Los Angeles Rams

[BET on This Game Here]

The Rams and the Raiders spent the week brawling during joint practices ahead of their nationally televised showdown. The Rams treat preseason like a practice. They have already lost top starters to injury and they don’t want to lose any more players in a meaningless game. Sean McVay has never had a winning record in the preseason. Meanwhile, Jon Gruden is 7-2 in the preseason and has not had a losing record in the exhibition since 2006. This spread is high for a reason.

Bet on the Raiders -6.5

Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks

[BET on This Game Here]

The Broncos had the best performance of any team in week one of the preseason. They have Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater fighting for the starting job and the public is buying in on Denver. But this spread has jumped too many points since the opening line. The value is on Seattle and they are 11-5 against the spread in the last 16 games as an underdog. Bet the birds.

Bet on the Seahawks +5

British Open Players

Strict COVID Protocols Waiting for British Open Players

Whether vaccinated or not, if you live in the United Kingdom, you won’t see the final easing of COVID restrictions until July 19. If you live in the United States and are traveling to the U.K., you are required to take a COVID test before departure and then pre-pay for COVID tests that will be taken on Day 2 and Day 8 of a 10-day quarantine once you’ve arrived.

If you are golfing in the Open Championship, which begins on July 15, you don’t have to officially quarantine. However, players will not be permitted to visit pubs, restaurants, and grocery stores or share accommodations, which is quite common for a week-long trip overseas. In fact, it’s that last restriction that might be most burdensome since many players are now scrambling to find accommodations.

Players, caddies, and the two allowed support personnel will be tested for COVID regularly and must maintain strict contract regulations. One family member may accompany them to the Open Championship. But that family member must follow the full 10-day U.K. quarantining guidelines.

The R&A, which runs the tournament, says that anyone who mixes with someone outside their inner bubble can be disqualified from the tournament. Anyone who is found to be near a person who tests positive, even if they themselves don’t test positive, can be disqualified.

Players are Not Happy with Restrictions

While PGA Tour members have enjoyed the reopening of venues in the United States and the easing of restrictions at tournaments, what they are facing for the British Open will be a shock to the system.

“I seriously thought about not going,” said one anonymous golfer. “I just can’t believe with the numerous examples of successfully run, safely held tournaments and majors here that they can’t figure out a better situation.”

Adding to the frustration of the players is that while they will essentially be on monitored quarantine for the duration of their stay in the U.K., the R&A is allowing fans to attend the tournament each day.

“There are going to be 32,000 fans allowed in every day, and they’re saying we can’t stay in anything other than the dedicated hotels – most of which are already sold out – because we’d be mixing with the public,” said instructor Pete Cowen. “We have all been vaccinated and will be tested before we’re allowed in. This ‘bubble’ we have created between ourselves has produced no problems at all.”

Back to the anonymous player who has expressed the frustrations of all players: “It’s aggravating that they deem the tournament safe enough for 32,000 fans a day to attend but won’t let a player’s wife or children travel and watch the tournament, nor will they even let players visit a restaurant without the threat of disqualification.”

The Open Championship will end on July 18, one day before what has been dubbed “Freedom Day” in the U.K. Jon Rahm leads the tournament futures golf odds board at +1000, followed by Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson at +1200 odds.

Olympic Golf Teams Almost Set

The U.S. Open marked the end of qualifying for the Olympic golf tournament, but it hasn’t quite hammered out which players will be competing and which players won’t. Qualified, but choosing to skip the competition, are Dustin Johnson (USA), Sergio Garcia (Spain), Tyrrell Hatton (Great Britain), and Louis Oosthuizen (South Africa).

The men’s Olympic competition begins on July 29 and ends on August 1. For the women, it goes from August 4 to August 8. The Ryder Cup isn’t until the end of September, so that’s not a conflict. But qualifying for the Ryder Cup is, as summed up by Garcia when he made his announcement.

“My number one sporting priority is the Ryder Cup at this moment. Everyone knows what the Ryder Cup means to me. My number one priority is to qualify for the European Team by my own merit and not have to wait for a possible invitation. If I had already qualified for the Ryder Cup, I would play the Olympic Games.”

The four golfers representing Team USA are Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, and Bryson DeChambeau.

Other top golfers in the 60-man field are Rory McIlroy (Ireland), Viktor Hovland (Norway), Hideki Matsuyama (Japan), Paul Casey (Great Britain), and Shane Lowry (Ireland).

The Big Business of the NBA Goes to Africa

The Big Business of the NBA Goes to Africa

The NFL, MLB, and NHL all have international players and enjoy popularity in other countries. But none of them hold a candle to being an international and global phenomenon compared to the NBA. An NBA partnership with Africa is meant to be.

This season the NBA has 107 international players on its rosters from a total of 41 players, including a record-tying 14 players from African countries.

European players can trace their roots to the NBA through Hank Biassatti. The Italian-born Biassatti first played on an NBA team in 1946. But back then, it was a mere trickle of foreign-born players coming to the NBA.

The floodgates began to open in the 1980s when the first African made it to the NBA in the person of Hakeem Olajuwon. The dominating center became one of the best players in NBA history and a hero to Nigerians and the whole of Africa.

There have now been 63 NBA players from the continent of Africa, with Nigeria and Senegal being the countries that produced the most. And that has meant big bucks for the NBA, including merchandise sales and media and licensing rights.

The formation of NBA Africa, with an initial value of $1 billion, was only natural. The sports betting market will open their arms to offer up wagering on the NBA in Africa.

Basketball Africa League

Along with NBA Africa and the business investment made jointly by African companies and the NBA, is a new league called Basketball Africa League. The BAL has already begun play with 12 teams from all over Africa. It’s a joint venture between the NBA and the International Basketball Federation, and for this first season, there will be 26 games, all played in Rwanda.

BAL president Amadou Gallo Fall said of the league, “Through the BAL, we will provide a platform for elite players from across the continent to showcase their talent and inspire fans of all ages, use basketball as an economic growth engine across Africa, and shine a light on Africa’s vibrant sporting culture.”

The 12 teams of the BAL first had to qualify by either winning their home country’s national league or by winning a qualifying tournament. The 12 teams are from Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Egypt, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, and Tunisia.

NBA Africa Modeled After NBA China

The business side of NBA Africa hopes to operate similarly to the way NBA China has worked since it was first created in 2008. Started with a $253 million investment from partners that included Disney, NBA China is now worth an estimated $5 billion and has given the league greater access to a market of 1.4 billion people.

The population of Africa is almost identical to China’s, with 1.396 billion people, according to the most recent United Nations estimate. Although unlike China, which was much later in coming to its appreciation of the NBA, in large part because of Yao Ming, who went to the league in 2002, Africans have a nearly forty-year history of NBA basketball stars.

One thing that will also differ between NBA Africa and NBA China is the running of the BAL. The NBA operates the Basketball Africa League, and the NBA has the full support of Africa. However, the Chinese Basketball Association is state-run. The relationship between the NBA and China remains strained following the dust-up in 2019 over tweets from an NBA executive that supported pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

The Investors

Giving NBA Africa instant credibility is investor Dikembe Mutombo, who is Congolese. He is joined by investors/former players Luol Deng (South Sudan), Grant Hill, Joakim Noah (his grandfather was a Cameroon soccer player), and Junior Bridgeman, and a former Milwaukee Buck turned business mogul estimated to be worth more than $600 million.

Joining the former NBA stars are two of Africa’s most influential business leaders, Tunde Folawiyo and Tope Lawani. Folawaiyo is CEO of the Yink and Folawiyo Group and is a Nigerian worth $650 million. Lawani is a Nigerian national and Harvard grad and is head of Helios Fairfax Partners, an investment group with capital valued at $3 billion.

Both Folawiyo and Lawani are on the NBA Africa board of directors. Along with NBA commissioner Adam Silver, NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum, and CEO of NBA Africa Victor Williams.
